The Bay of Monaco is not to exactly a typical anchorage. This is an area where the sea is deep and where there is little shelter. It is however a busy place especially in season. The Principality attracts a large number of yachts and with few berths available, many yachts have to drop anchor in this bay for a few days.

This area between the entrance to Port Hercule and Roquebrune is very deep. It is prohibited to anchor in the area directly in front of the Fairmont Hotel or less than 200 meters from the coast of Monaco (clearly marked during the season by yellow buoys) and in the Larvotto Reserve, located at the East end of Monaco (where the beach of the same name is located). Consequently, the area left available for mooring closest to the coast offers more than 50 m depths. Only yachts or cruise ships equipped with anchors and sufficient chain for such depths chains can moor off this location. More generally, the Monegasque waters are known for being very deep. For instance, the largest jetty of Port Hercules is located in such a deep location that in fact it floats and is tied to the seabed with chains.

Despite the microclimate caused by the "dog-head" mountain (Tete de Chien) overlooking the Principality, weather can on occasion change very quickly in the bay. Yacht owners and crew should remain particularly vigilant about the weather changes and plan alternatives mooring locations, in a port or in more sheltered areas, such as the bay of Beaulieu and Villefranche Rade, should the weather turn to storm.

The Bay of Monaco is particularly popular during the major events that take place in the Principality during the year. These bring a large number of yachts especially during the Grand Prix and the Monaco Yacht Show. During these events, the bay even lacks space for all them to moor. Thus, yachts wishing to get the best anchoring spot (near the port usually), are best to show-up early.
